How AI Is Changing Digital Asset Management (And What It Still Can't Do)
AI has transformed how DAMs tag, search, and organize assets. But the most important gap — knowing which asset to use for a specific piece of content — remains unsolved. Here's the honest picture.
By 2026, "AI-powered" has become the default feature claim in the digital asset management category. Bynder has AI Agents. Canto launched AI Visual Search. Brandfolder has Brand Intelligence. Air shipped Creative Intelligence. Every major DAM has AI features.
Some of them are genuinely transformative. Others are marketing vocabulary applied to features that existed before the term "AI" got hot.
Here's an honest assessment of what AI has changed in DAM — and where the category still has a significant gap.
What AI has genuinely improved
Auto-tagging and metadata generation
This is real. Before AI-powered tagging, getting metadata onto 50,000 assets required a dedicated DAM administrator, a taxonomy spec, and months of manual work. Today, every major DAM can analyze a newly uploaded image and generate semantic tags automatically — identifying subjects, colors, mood, composition, and more.
The quality varies. The best systems (Bynder, Canto, Daryl) produce tags that are genuinely useful for search. The worst produce tags that are technically accurate but practically useless ("outdoor, person, clothing"). But the category has meaningfully reduced the manual metadata burden.
Natural language search
Also real. Instead of typing "beach_summer_2024" and hoping that's how the image was tagged, you can type "warm outdoor lifestyle with natural light" and get relevant results. The limitation: natural language search is still retrieval. It's better retrieval. But it produces results — a set of potentially relevant assets — and leaves the final selection decision to the human.

Despite significant AI investment across every major DAM, none of them have addressed what might be the most important question in the social media asset workflow: "Given my available assets, which one is right for this specific piece of content, and why?"
This question requires cross-modal reasoning — simultaneously analyzing a piece of written content (the post) and a visual asset (the image) to evaluate their fit. It's not a retrieval problem. It's not a tagging problem. It's a recommendation problem of a fundamentally different kind.
As of today, no major DAM produces a recommendation engine that operates at this level. AI in the DAM category can tell you what's IN an asset. It cannot tell you which asset belongs WITH a specific piece of content.
Reasoning transparency
Every AI feature in the DAM category operates as a black box. Search returns results — you don't know why those results and not others. Tags are applied — you don't know the confidence level or the reasoning. Similarity search surfaces related images — the relationship is implicit, not explained.
The absence of reasoning transparency creates a trust problem. If you don't understand why an AI recommended something, you can't evaluate whether to trust the recommendation. And if you can't trust the recommendation, you default to doing it yourself — which defeats the purpose.
